I'm a traditionally and self published author. I write in the genre of children and YA at the moment but working my way up to adults. I'm a sports loving, photo taking gal who loves to sing/dance to my own enjoyment. I love to laugh even at myself. I am also owned by 8 birds and 2 hamsters, and yes they know it. :)

Am I Successful?: A Writer’s View

\JasperPic

How do you define success as an author? When I first started writing a few years ago, my goal was to write a book for any future grandchildren. That was the scope of it. But that soon changed when I decided to throw my hat into the ring and make a go as a writer by trying to get my book published. My goals soon changed as I wanted my book picked up by a publisher, placed in libraries and book stores. A big dream indeed. I’ve always been a dreamer for as long as I can remember. The thoughts that constantly flow threw my brain would make some people dizzy.

But once my goal for my children’s book came to pass, all three have happened, I had to sit back and decide what was next. It was logical to write volume two which I have and it’s in its final edits. I am about forty percent done of volume three.

My book has sold in Egypt, India, England, Scotland and the US. I have had a number of interviews and Jasper has flown to quite a few places.

So would people consider this successful? Well it all depends on who you ask. A good portion of people will break it down to money and how much am I making from it. I have read it takes a new author two to three years to actually get to that point. If the cards falls right for them.

Do I consider myself successful? My goals have been met for my Jasper series down to the last line. Do I feel successful? In a way I don’t for I still have a long way to go but when I look at the grand scheme of things I have come a long way. A time from when people would roll their eyes when I said I was writing. When people were waiting for me to give up my writing hobby and move on. A time when I was not taken seriously so basically kept it to myself and other writers.

Now that I have written all of the above I pause as I think of how I feel on this topic. It is an accomplishment I am very proud off. It took a lot of time, effort and grief to get to this point. So how do I celebrate?

-I framed my writing contract

-I framed a copy of the cover to my book

-I framed a copy of the computer screen when my writing group, The Wonder Chicks, made the Amazon Best Sellers list

-I framed my first dollar earned.

I am slowly running out of space. But now it is time for new goals and dreams as I push forward. And for me to work at getting them accomplished. It’s tough being a dreamer. But it helps me strive forward and keeps me motivated.

Cross Promotions

How many people actually do cross promotions? I find regardless if you publish traditionally or self publish, you need to get your name out there. More and more authors are required to put in the time and work needed to do their own marketing. This is where cross promoting can lend a helping hand. I have had a long belief that writers need to help other writers. This is not an easy career we have chosen. Helping each other not only builds contacts but in some cases good relationships and even friendships. Something that can only help us.

This could come in a few ways: interview an author, showcase their books, have a guest post from an author on your site, when an author has news or special offers share on your site or do a review of their books. These are the ones I have done in the past minus the interview though I will be remedying that soon. My site http://www.mainemuse.wordpress.com is strictly for book reviews though I place the reviews on Goodreads, Amazon, and Shelfari as well. It is my way of giving back. I been fortunate that people have opened their doors and have interviewed me on their sites. Others have showcased my books, a guest post and reviews of my own books.

They are fun to do. But not only that, when I do it for others it always gives me a good feeling inside that I helped a fellow writer out. Cross promotion is an invaluable tool we have in our arsenal, we really shouldn’t ignore it if we can help it. It’s a big world out there. Why make it even bigger by not helping each other?

The Wonder Chicks: A Writing Group

2013-05-02 12.57.56(2)

I formed a writing group a few years ago called the Wonder Chicks. At first it was just my gal pal Lisa and me. It soon blossomed into a group of five amazing women. Yes I am including myself in that. We have five members and that’s enough. A lot gets done when we are together. We can get kinda of loud. All one has to do is ask anyone at Barnes and Noble who has been seated near us. Our enthusiasm for each other and our own project usually gets us carried away.

Last year we wrote the book, “Dragons in the Attic” which was released last December. It was a lot of work, time and effort as we did what was needed to get this out. Through the ups and downs of getting five authors to work on a project like this together was not easy. There was a lot of laughter, some tiffs and a heck of a lot of smiles. We still remain friends to this day and our group is just as strong.

On March 12th we ran our book up the Amazon Best Sellers List and peaked at number nine which we are very proud off. On March 25th we spoke at a local library. We each read an excerpts from one of our stories. After which we each talked a bit on several topics. Mine was on the differences between self traditional publishing.

I been told by a few people we did a really good job. I’m really proud of my ladies. Not only are they awesome writers, they are also amazing women in their own rights. They are supportive and caring individuals who gets what it means to be a writer. They celebrate my ups and listen to my downs. They are my own personal cheerleaders.

I love how any one of us can contact the others and say, “Hey, let’s get together and write.” Or another might say, “I have a chapter I need help on.” And we circle the wagons as we work on whatever project that is being discussed. It is a great group, one that has truly enhanced me. What started out as writers meeting has turned into really awesome friendships. Lisa, Gina, Robin and Missy I have to say thank you.
