Freelance writing: Andy Warhol

I wrote for a local magazine in 2014. It was a paid gig. With things getting busy I moved on to other aspects of my business. This year I decided to try again to write for local magazines in the county.

A popular one responded and was open to me being a contributing writer if it worked out that is. My test would be my first article to them. I was to do an article on Andy Warhol.

I had heard of him but knew very little. As I contacted the key-note speaker and the person in charge of the exhibit I was educated on why Warhol was so well know. The advancements he made for himself and artists that follow him was incredible.

The article won’t come out until next month, if it does, but it has to be approved first by the editor.

When I first read my assignment I did internally freak out. But as I dove into the history I was fascinated by what I was finding. It also reminded me about the joy I had as a freelance writer in 2014 and I am glad I am revisiting it once more this year.

There is so much more to writing than books and short stories. Expanding one’s view can be rewarding and just down right fun.

As an author do you have a resume?

As a writer do you think of resumes? I know I didn’t. And that was my way of thinking until I checked into submitting to local magazines in our area. The first thing out of their mouth was send us your resume. It has been years, and I mean years, since I have had to write one for myself. The time frame was when I graduated college.

The first thing I did was make a list and dates of what I had accomplished as an author. This is where having a social platform came in handle. I just had to go to the archives of my sites and see about the time certain events had occurred.

Besides having books out, short stories in anthology and stand alone stories I had more. I won a grant from our county art council, I gave a seminar at a conference on social media and I have written for a local magazine.

When I did the write up it looked better than I first anticipated. I will include my degrees for I worked too hard for them as well as the price obtaining the diplomas.

I have not found the right template yet to use. That is proving elusive to me. But my attitude to when I first was asked to produced one to now as I write it up has changed.

Even if you don’t need one right now it might be a good idea to start for the just in case moments. But not only that it is a good way to show off what you have accomplished in a professional way.

Updating your social platform: How long has it been?

I have preached here before on the importance of having an author’s platform which includes online and in real life. But how many do? How many feel it is a good idea but never get around to it? From my experience from the people in my writing circle in this area very few do regardless of the reasons.

But to the few that do how often do you go back and check your sites?I try to do a health check on my various sites every three months. Do I do it? No, not always. But it is a vital tool in your kit to not only have a platform but a healthy one.

You might not have updated your books. You might have a different bio that you are using now. You might not like the style or theme you are using and want a change. You just might want something different since it is a new year.

But that is not the only reason. If you don’t keep your platform healthy and active that can affect your presence. How many times have you gone to a site and see that it is outdated? Or worse that it has no new information to share with you? Perhaps you been to a site and see that links or videos are no longer working. Maybe there was a glitch in the system and your site now is not how you had it.

Yes, life has a way of getting in the way that can slow us down. My family just suffered a huge emotional lost and I have not been around. But as I made my rounds I fixed things here and there, spruce up other things and showed I was active.

It is time-consuming to go over all of our author’s platform but it is well worth it for you, your books and your brand.
