I’m know for birds and squirrel through my books

People are hilarious. Ever since I wrote a book about my parrot in the form of a children’s chapter book series and a true life comedy book on my war with my backyard squirrels I get things out of the blue from them. My email, text and Facebook page gets pictures, sayings, news clippings, jokes, videos and so on about birds and squirrels doing what they do best which is to entertain or frustrate us.

I am now known as the bird and squirrel woman. Nothing I would have aspired to be growing up in a small town in Northern Maine

Here are just a few examples of what people have sent me over the last few years. I just don’t have enough space to place everything I have received. Hey it’s nice to be known for something that makes people smile and laugh, right?

It is my main character’s birthday

IMG_0079This month is our green son’s birthday. We really don’t know when it is but what we do know is that he came home, to his forever home, in October of 1999. Jasper was five. I still remember how he would not leave the cage for six months, afraid and uncertain of what was going on with him. His first owner did not treat him well and those are memories hard to forget I am sure. We have all seen the commercials or have heard stories from others.

But now you wouldn’t know this green animal would be such a huge presence in our lives, all of our lives. He is a sassy bird and he won’t let you forget it. They say, the experts, that parrots are perceptual two-year olds. That is the best and accurate way to describe it.

Most of my birds are rescued from places I wish they had never seen. A rescued animal will give you more love then one can ever expect from another.

But this time of year it is his birthday where he will receive extra loving, if that is even possible hehe, and treats for being with us another year. It is hard to imagine what it was like before he came home with us. I have tried and those memories seem to blend into the woodwork.

For now it is his birthday, #JasperAmazonParrot, he is 21 and may we have him for many more years.

Speech: Author platform and social media

imagesThis past Saturday I gave a small speech to one of my writers group. There were three of us sharing information to the members. One discussed the process of being a self published author. The second filled in the gaps we left behind thank goodness. I talked about the traditional side with query letters, the dos and don’t of the process, gave a nice list of links and then moved on to social media via author platform and why it is so important.

This is something I been working on for a few years now, my author’s platform to where now it is almost second nature to me so doing a small gathering on this was easy on my part. They were so interested I been asked, maybe coerce is a better word, to do another one at my convenience which will be next Wednesday. It is nice a/ to be able to talk about something I am very familiar with to where it is little work to where I just need to prepare for a few run through and b/ helping other people out especially writers who are more green then I am.

There is enough room for all us to have our books up there. We all write in different genres, different age groups and different target audiences and there will never, hopefully, be a shortage of readers. As an avid reader myself it is a great time for the choices keep expanding on what is out there to read.
