Time away

2012-08-07-12-13-38

It’s that time of year when I head up to Northern Maine to check up on my mom to see how she is doing. I live far up, I mean really really far up. It is roughly 12 miles from the Canadian border. My access to the internet will be spotty at best. My mom does not own a computer so I will be making my way to the one room library we have in town.

I will be leaving on the 10th and be back on the 25th. My home town walks on a slower pace of life. Which is good for when I get back, I get back into the fray.

A good visit for sure but it always goes by fast. Before I know it, I will be heading back down to North Carolina and getting back into the hectic live that is mine.

See you all soon.

Freelance: A new opportunity

2013-05-02 12.57.56(2)

A wonderful opportunity has fallen into my lap. The coordinator for one of my writing groups sent a group email to some of the writers, the ones she felt would take advantage of what was being offered. There is a new magazine in the area, it is 8 months old and is solely owned and run by women. GO US! She is looking for writers for her magazine, those who will make a regular contribution to her magazine. I dropped her a line and we been going back and forth in email. Bottom line is I will be meeting her today at 9:30am to see if I fit what she is looking for.

The pay is minimal. But when I found out it was a paying gig to me that was just icing on the cake. I was not expecting any monetary funds for the work. I was looking at it from a business sense of promoting myself and getting my name out there. It will be a continual free advertisement for me as long as I write, if she likes what she sees, for the CEO. I ran some ideas by her and she loved them. I am very excited to meet her and hope it will fall into place. What is involved or required I do not know as of yet.

Why did I write her in the first place? It comes back to one of my two mantras that involves writing. All they can say is no, that’s it. But if she says yes, this could open doors for me to avenues I have never thought of before. If nothing else I will be writing and people from the county will be reading it. As a writer this is a win.

UPDATE:

We met and talked for about two hours. She liked what I had to offer. But it got even better. She asked if I was a photographer which I am. So if I do my own shoots with the articles she will pay me the fee she would pay for her own photographers to do the job. How cool is this? I am so excited. I should be expecting two assignments to arrive via email. I will soon be able to add freelance writer and photographer to my hat of things done.

Happy Birthday To Me

Today is my birthday. WOOT. It has already been a great one so far. Last Friday my son took me out for lunch and then to see the new Captain America movie. We had a good time and had some mom and son bonding.

I have received some lovely cards and money to boot. More WOOT here. My husband took me out to eat on Sunday to a place of my choice. On Monday my friend Adrianne took me out for lunch. I have received the book “ Wired For Story” from my good friend John. And a really good thing is I joined the IHOP birthday club so this means I received an email for a free meal at IHOP. And my husband just surprised me a few minutes ago with a transformer computer. These are the ones that are a tablet and laptop in one. WOOT WOOT WOOT

All of this has happened before today even made its way. It has been a good few days. The last two years I have spent my birthday the same way. I have gone to a local nature park with some cameras, sketch book, a reading book and some good sneakers.

It looks like it will be raining today like it did yesterday so I might not be able to do anything more than walking and taking pictures in the rain but I am down with that. It is a chance for me to stay away from the computer and electronics, though will keep my phone with me, and just enjoy the day to do things I love to do. Granted I can do this just about any time of the year but we all know life has a way of getting in the way.

For my birthday I am able to shed those to the side and just contract on some distracted hours and not feel guilty about it. I expect to have a blast, I tend to when I give my mind and body a break from the stress of events going on around me.

I have more to look forward to. Tomorrow a friend is feeding me lunch for my birthday and later on this week my ladies from my writers group will partake in a meal with me as we celebrate my birthday.

Fun times ahead. I prescribe this for everyone. It is good for the soul.
