Authors showcase

IMG_7894

Two days after I arrived back from Maine was an authors showcase at the headquarters library in my area. It was something you had to apply for however the librarians asked me to join and so they kept me a spot. Nice to know people, right?

I made sure my items were ready prior to leaving on my trip so that way I wouldn’t be in such a rush when I got back. There were 37 authors that showed up with the thunderstorm that made its way for this event. Consider it was pouring heavily, the amount of people who showed up to support us was impressive. Readers rock, we really do.

With my last name starting with a W, I was the last in the row. Fortunately, my table mate was a sweet retired history teacher and we talked during the event. I did sell a couple of actual books. But what I really enjoyed was being able to talk about my book, Jasper and how it came about.

When I told a particular lady about how half of my birds are rescued she grasped my hands firmly and said thank you and said again thank you with tears in her eyes. She gets it. There were so many bird lovers in the crowd that I got lost in the moment and forgot that I was there to showcase my works.

For a free event I received the following:

-I made a new friend

-Sold some of my books in print and digital

-Hung out with bird lovers

-Practicing being out to show my works( Something I need practice in)

-Added some people to my newsletter

-I am sure I am leaving some stuff out

This is a yearly event, my first one, and it went very well. I had a great time and I believe my husband did as well as he talked to most of the writers and took loads of pictures. In fact someone said to him, “You look like someone who has stories to tell.” After which the man said he would like to collaborate with him on a book. I thought that was awesome.

Next year I see me doing this again, perhaps with a better understanding of what I should do. I suspect I will still be at the end, Steve will still be my table mate and we will have two hours talking about writing.

What a great win.

I’m back

I am back from my trip to Maine. The days flew by, as they always do. But now I am back to step into the craziness that is my world. It is taking longer to get caught up this year. This is due to some health issues I am having. It has slowed me down but not stopped me completely. I just have to pace myself.

Two days after I stepped off the plan I had a doctor appointment and also an author’s showcase at a local library. I was off running. These are some of the items that need my attention now. I have two publishers that are interested in volume two of my children’s series. Also I need to round-up two interviews for the magazine I now work for. There are a bunch of books I need to read and review and after going through my email, I see there are requests for more. Squirrel Mafia will be released this month if all goes well so now I have to go over the final edits and let my editor know. The list is long of things I need to do. Isn’t it always the way it is? You cross off one or two items and add three or four which makes a never-ending cycle.

Luckily my house was still standing as my two guys did a good job of keeping it in shape. That helped sooooo much. Now I need to educate them on how to clean five bird cages.

I’m back. I’m ready. I hope that is.

Social Platform: Quality vs Quanity

FairA

I started a newsletter in January of this year. I have a nice small following. This is a small challenge monthly to come up with things to say, especially if there is hardly any news, if any at all. I break it up into four to five parts. The first part is just a hello to the gang. From there I go to what is new since I last sent an issue to what writing projecting I am working on. The last two sections are pretty simple. I place a picture of my book with links to where it can be purchased. The last part is dedicated to Jasper. Without him this journey would not have been started. A picture or video of his royal greeness fills this spot.

I mentioned the small following. It made me thing that all things come with a bit of time. When I started this blog, I had roughly ten members who wanted to read what I had to say. It has grown over the last few years steadily. My blog that is strictly for book reviews is picking up steam one member at a time.

The same can be said for my Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, G+ and my Pinterest sites. I think of this due to the many offers there are out there to help you increase membership across the social medium platforms available to us. Yes it would be really awesome if my followers would be through the roof. But there is a lot to say for going at it slowly but surely as the numbers go up. These are the members that might stay with you a bit longer than any mad dash membership drive we might want to sign up for.

The saying quality over quantity comes to mind. I appreciate the people here who come to read my post and those on my other platforms. For with you all, I am building a connection with people, you are not just a name on a list of people. I prefer it this way. Staying power has a lot to do with connections and how well they work for the two involved.

So while I will continually get the email saying how to increase followers, I will pass. One has to do what feels right for them and the way I am doing it works for me.
