I'm a traditionally and self published author. I write in the genre of children and YA at the moment but working my way up to adults. I'm a sports loving, photo taking gal who loves to sing/dance to my own enjoyment. I love to laugh even at myself. I am also owned by 8 birds and 2 hamsters, and yes they know it. :)

Sports: Life would be boring without it

Well football is now done as far as games and playoffs goes. What we have left is hockey and basketball before in a few short weeks pitchers and catchers go to spring training to get ready for the long season of baseball.

I been an avid sports fan for as long as I could remember sitting on my twin bed looking at the 13 inch black and white TV that my mom had bought me one Christmas. It filled up the time when there was nothing to do, when I was left home alone and times when it was just too cold to go out. I am from Northern Maine.

Sports will lift you up and drop you like a hot potato, the price of rooting for any sport any team anywhere. It will bring bouts of anger, joy, tears, happiness and so much more.

Where would I be without watching my teams across the board would mean

– more free time

-more money since I would not be spending it on games, travel and any things I might buy to show who I root forbidden

-less people for a good portion of my friends are ones I knew growing up, went to college with and also with to games with

What I would be doing would be so completely different and the wife my husband knows would not be the one he knows now. He has put up with a lot of my ups and downs, my sitting in front of the TV, refusing to move until the game is done or excessively watching reports, draft day and so on concerning anything on the many sports I watch.

I can’t imagine being any different. Sports were my baby sitters when my sisters got older and did their own thing. Sports taught me to embrace my nerdiness with stats, math and science for it does embrace those disciplines.

Sports is awesome, even with the hits and joys, for without it life for me would be way duller.

Prompts: Writing and photo

IMG_4774One of my resources to write is prompts, whether that be writing or picture.. My current WIP “Lost Faith” is based on a one line writing prompt. From that I wrote 1600 plus words making it a short story. Seeing I could do more with it I extended it to a short novella. Feeling I had more to say on it I continued and now it stands at over 50k words as I am working to make it a trilogy.

My short story and first paranormal piece ever “The Door In the Tree” came from a picture prompt of a door in a tree. It has received some lovely reviews from those who have read it. This is a genre I would never have thought to write in if I had not seen this prompt. My first ever crime novel which is still a WIP came from a small one line writing prompt.

So I am very bias when it comes to prompts and how effective they can be for writers and for me especially. They just open up new worlds to stories I would never consider writing in the first place. By writing outside my comfort zone and outside the box I am learning new ways to express the creations in my head. I like that.

It makes writing more interesting for me as I research to learn the new concepts I am working on. That is a winner winner chicken dinner for me. I love to learn, I have watched so many documentaries on History Channel I started seeing repeats. In this way I can extend that thirst for knowledge through a writing or picture prompt.

So no matter what you use to get the writer in you going whether that is a writing or picture prompt, memories and experiences you have had or an over active imagination, good for you. If it brings the stories to light onto paper for others to read that is what matters.

What my library has done for me as a patron and author

onwriting2

I have been asked twice, one by a librarian in town and by an author who runs her library’s blog space, to describe what my library has done for me. The first time it was a video I submitted to the library the second time will be posted on a library website in Texas sometimes in the near future. To put into words what it has done for me is hard to completely put down into words. But this is what I wrote for Texas.

————————

I first started thinking about writing in July of 2009. I actually began in December, however. Not knowing anything about writing, nor knowing anyone who was also a writer like myself, or the process involved with it, I was on my own. I just wrote until my first manuscript was done.

Several months later, I was checking out the website of one of our local libraries, and I noticed they had started a writer’s group. I was thrilled. Attending the first meeting, there were six of us, five librarians and me. This was a huge boost. It gave me the motivation to continue, but that is just a small portion of how the library has helped me throughout this journey.

Last November was the third year they hosted a free writer’s conference. This is huge in the sense that the nearest conference for us is about an hour away. The really big ones are even further. To have one in our area is fantastic. It’s also free. Hello! We get to attend free classes and seminars on various topics that can help us with our writing. Each year, the guest speaker has been spot on and amazing.

The library also brings in feature authors, which is hosted by the Friends of The Library. This gives us insight on how authors are doing throughout the literary field. The talks are friendly and laid-back, and it gives us inspiration as well.

If that was not enough, the materials you can borrow from the library are writing books, magazines, and computers to use. If you don’t have any of these things, access to them is a writer’s dream. The staff is friendly and very helpful if you need help in researching a topic.

Before I started writing, I was already a fan of our library system. At one point, I was going so often that one librarian asked me what shift was I on that week. Another gave me the keys to unlock a door since she recognized me from my being at the library so often.

Books, movies, CDs, and the endless programs they offer to the community is a true blessing for us here. There is always something to do at the library, which is always free to the public.

Now that I am a published author, it is even more invaluable because of the services they offer me throughout this venture. To me, if they had not started a writer’s group in this area, who knows where I would be right now. I am grateful for the libraries in my area. They are a great resource to have for those of us that need to make use of their services, especially someone who writes and researches often.
