Sharing is not an option!

We tend to think of squirrels as cute furry creatures that scamper around playing while looking for nuts. Yet I’ve a different outlook on these rodents from Hades.

As an animal lover, one who’s owned by eight birds, I’ve had the opportunity to observe a group of squirrels around my home here in the suburbs for the past year. The experience I’ve gained gives a whole new meaning to the words ‘little darlings.’

I offer you a unique perspective of the furry friends entangled within our everyday lives. Their antics and shenanigans have earned them the name of the Squirrel Mafia. This book chronicles my ongoing battle with these pesky little critters.

Chapter 1

Maine

Squirrels are furry and adorable animals that come from Hell. They give us the illusion they’re cuddly, and full of sugar and spice and all that is nice. Well, if you want that kind of story you might want to put this one down.

Growing up in Northern Maine, I honestly don’t recall seeing squirrels around me. My life could have been preoccupied with things that mattered more, like being a kid and spending time with family. Granted, the weather in Maine is harsh during the winter months, which can last a good portion of the year.

Wildlife, though, is plentiful in this region with moose, bear, and deer. Between the different hunting seasons, one would think people would notice squirrels running around. As numerous and hardy as they are, one would logically think that even a region as cold as Maine would be full of them.

Perhaps they didn’t bother me back then. I still would have been under the misconception that they were cute. Perhaps my memory is just lapsing, or I’m just in denial. Yeah, that’s it, denial!

Lesson learned—squirrels can make you forget.

About The Author:

Sharon is a native of New England, raised in Northern Maine. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and son. She is also owned by a flock of eight birds.

Sharon has a B.S. degree in Chemistry, but is currently disabled, so writing keeps her busy. She tends to lose all track of time. The world could be coming to an end, and she would be oblivious to it. When writing, she envisions the scenes in her head, and tries to imagine the reality of what is written down on paper. Different options, scenes, and problems are noted on the side in case she can use them later.

Sharon tends to write by long hand as the flow works better for her this way. Her bookshelf consists of works written by Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Bentley Little, and James Patterson. The best advice she has ever received about writing was to write about what you know. Her first thought was, “Yeah right,” but it really is that easy. A writer just needs to know a little tidbit to turn it into a short story, and soon enough, there’s a book.

Sharon loves to read, sketch, take pictures, walk, exercise, go to the movies, and listen to music. She is a budding bird watcher, and knits on the side. She is a huge sports fan of baseball, basketball, hockey, and football.

Two of her short stories were published in the anthology, “Cassandra’s Roadhouse.” She will be releasing several short story anthologies during the upcoming months. Her children’s book, “Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure,” has just been picked up by Fountain Blue Publishing, and should be released sometime this year.

Jasper’s bio

JasperI have had a lot of people ask about Jasper, http://tinyurl.com/p34thhb, prior and after purchasing my book. So I have come up with a small bio that I hand out to them concerning his royal greenness.

Jasper T. Williams was adopted in 1999 at the age of five. His first owner, an army soldier, either did not properly research how to take care of a parrot or her time in the service kept her from doing so. Jasper was held in a cage the size meant for cockatiels for the first five years of his life.

When he came home it took him 3-4 months before he would even come out. We made a promise to him that he would never been locked up in his new home. He would have the freedom to come and go as he please in reference to his cage.

Jasper is a yellow cheek Amazon, or the more popular term a Red Lored. They are native to the tropical regions of the Americas. They can live up to 80 years old.

The song that is written in my first book, “Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure” is one I wrote for Jasper. As of today he has four songs written especially for him by me.

His favorite foods are any kind of potato. This can include the French fries, hash browns, mash or broiled. He loves spaghetti and if it is a green vegetable he will love it forever. If it is a fruit he will try it. His favorite is watermelon.

His favorite shows are Spongebob,Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo. He has the good sense to not like Scrappy Do. His favorite channels are Discovery, Nat Geo and Cartoon Network. He loves when his dad plays the harmonica and loves to sing with us and at us. He loves it when my mom speaks French to him. He hates squirrels and small bugs.

Excerpt:

Natalea Williams scooped up the mail scattered across the floor, and scanned the envelopes with disinterest. She flipped through each one, rolling her eyes as bill after bill from various creditors caught her eye. None of them were worth her time until she came across a thick manila envelope with her name scrawled across its smooth surface in a slanted flowery script.

Dropping the rest of the mail onto the stand, she tore the envelope open, and promptly earned herself a small paper cut. She drew the offended digit between her lips, sucking at her finger as she pulled the letter open, and read the lines penned upon the paper. Her eyes widened with surprise as the letter’s contents sunk in.

What the heck?” she said aloud, taking a moment to reread the document. “That–That’s not possible!”

Natalea rushed down the hall toward the kitchen. She pulled the cordless phone out of its base, and dialed her best friend’s number. Tapping her foot with impatience, she eyed the letter with confusion. The call finally went through, and the person on the other end picked up.

What is it now, Nat?” Sheila Wynman inquired.

Hello to you, too,” Natalea quipped, rolling her eyes at the ceiling.

Sheila popped the gum she was chewing as she spoke into the receiver. “There’s only one reason why you’re callin’ me this early.”

Yeah?”

You got the letter, didn’t you?”

The manila envelope and the accompanying letter fluttered to the floor as Natalea held the phone tightly between her fingers. “You know what this is about?”

Sheila examined her fingernails and nodded, realizing a little too late that Natalea couldn’t see her doing so. “Yes,” she admitted.

How?”

Sheila cleared her throat and took a deep breath before replying, “I saw a kiosk in some store down in Soho announcin’ a contest for someone to win a date with THE Brody Michaels. I thought of you and how you’re positively gaga over him. Figured it wouldn’t hurt to sign you up for it.”

Natalea sighed with exasperation. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

Her best friend chuckled with amusement. “So they say. Did you win?”

Yeah.”

Sheila’s right arm rose into the air, and she pumped it with excitement. “Hoorah!” Her green eyes were bright with delight. “How long till you gotta meet him?”

Natalea bent down to pick up the letter, and quickly scanned it for what she needed to know. “Two weeks.”

Two weeks?”

Uh-huh.”

Sheila groaned as she made a mental list of what she needed to do in order to get her best friend ready for the event. “That’s not enough time, but I suppose we can make do.”

Make do with what?”

In gettin’ you ready. You do want to make a good impression, don’t you?”

Well, yeah, but . . .”

But nothin’, Nat. By the time I’m done with you, Brody Michaels won’t know what hit him.”
