Finding content for your social platform

 

Social-DraftWhere do you find content to talk about for your blog and or social media platform? For some people it’s no problem as they talk about their business and the different aspects of it regardless of what their chosen field is.

To others they may pause in front of their computer looking at the sky hoping something will fall that they can use. As writers do we solely talk about the business and our books or do we do a few articles on things that shows our readers who we are or even more so do we do a balance of both?

personally for me I try to do a bit of both so an overview can be seen. Does that effect me opposite of what I am trying to accomplish I do not know. When I am looking at other author’s pages and I read their content that is useful I appreciate it. When I learn a bit about them I appreciate it more.

Finding content can be difficult if one blogs or post on their platform frequently causing the need to find content on a regular basis. At one point I started making a list of things to talk about so that way I would have topics to look over when the time came. That has helped me. Also reading other people’s blogs can give you ideas of what might work or not work for yourself.

Content. A topic that can deter people from branding themselves, and if one can’t over come that who knows what we might be missing from that person who can make a difference in their lives as well as our own.

Business: Do you charge what you are worth?

 

 

2013-07-27 09.19.12Pricing your work and worth is not easy. How do you figure out how much an hour of your time for the knowledge and experience that you will use to help your client? I think a lot of us undervalue ourselves, not wanting to charge too much and scare people off. But yet when we break down the fee we can see how much we have under cut ourselves.

How we see ourselves as people in so many ways gets hit from a host of places. So when it is time to put a number on what we know we shy from that. It was not until my first client who actually set the standard of how much I charge that I started to feel good about it. In fact she refused to pay me zero. She said what I knew was worth it to her and that my time was valuable. Thanks to her I have progress into making business grow with new ventures.

Let me take a step back. For about three to four years I told people in my writing groups to let me help them. I wanted to show them how I did it. I wanted to teach them what I had learned in what took a few years to figure out on my own and with help from those who were making it.

I didn’t get a nibble. Not one bite. Maybe people feel I am not legit if I don’t charge? Not sure. A lot of people helped me when I first started and when I asked how I could repay them they said always pay it forward. I tried. A few people I was able to. Most of the time no.

Looking at the ratio of pay scales it was in the range of what other charge. So now I charge. Does that give me legitimacy? Perhaps. Will it make the people who said they would want my help and never stepped up be mad when they find out? Probably.

But now part of my business includes more than writing and photography. It includes creating an author’s platform and developmental editing. Who knows it may expand to even more.

Freelance: A new opportunity

A wonderful opportunity has fallen into my lap. The coordinator for one of my writing groups sent a group email to some of the writers, the ones she felt would take advantage of what was being offered. There is a new magazine in the area, it is 8 months old and is solely owned and run by women. GO US! She is looking for writers for her magazine, those who will make a regular contribution to her magazine. I dropped her a line and we been going back and forth in email. Bottom line is I will be meeting her today at 9:30am to see if I fit what she is looking for.

The pay is minimal. But when I found out it was a paying gig to me that was just icing on the cake. I was not expecting any monetary funds for the work. I was looking at it from a business sense of promoting myself and getting my name out there. It will be a continual free advertisement for me as long as I write, if she likes what she sees, for the CEO. I ran some ideas by her and she loved them. I am very excited to meet her and hope it will fall into place. What is involved or required I do not know as of yet.

Why did I write her in the first place? It comes back to one of my two mantras that involves writing. All they can say is no, that’s it. But if she says yes, this could open doors for me to avenues I have never thought of before. If nothing else I will be writing and people from the county will be reading it. As a writer this is a win.

 

UPDATE:

We met and talked for about two hours. She liked what I had to offer. But it got even better. She asked if I was a photographer which I am. So if I do my own shoots with the articles she will pay me the fee she would pay for her own photographers to do the job. How cool is this? I am so excited. I should be expecting two assignments to arrive via email. I will soon be able to add freelance writer and photographer to my hat of things done.
