It’s so easy to write and publish a book: I’ve been told

I have heard over the years how easy it is to write. It is not that simple or easy. It be great if it was. So I pulled up some notes on things that authors need to remember and include from a character development class I took.

Do you have your setting correct? It tells you where and when a story line is occurring. It has to be believable for it gives you the opportunity to deliver a backdrop for your book. For example if you are in the tundra or jungle odds are the book is an adventure. If the dust bowl in the Midwest is where you are at the character might experience tough times in the story line.

One can’t forget that the mood and setting can change through the book. Location and weather also hints where the reader will find themselves. The setting gives us the physical boundaries and develops the plot and characters. If we can’t wrap our minds around it you will lose us.

You can’t forget the good guy who is the central figure that readers can identify with but they must go through changes through the book or else they will fall flat and be one dimension. You want your characters to be well-rounded. They should have positive features and still be flawed making them dynamic as they change with the experiences they encounter. We develop characters directly or indirectly. Directly we state what the character looks like, what they say, do or feel. Indirectly we let the readers draw the conclusions by the words written.

But hey let’s not forget about the plot which is an arrangement of consequence of the story including conflict and obstacles. And even then there is still more to think on and perfect. One has to include the conflict and the resolution.  And still that is not the end.

There is so much more that goes on in writing a book and making it published ready. To tell someone writing is easy has never picked up a pen and tried.

Blogging and the questions that go with it

How often should a blogger post? Does it depend on demand or personal choice? Could it be random? Do you add pictures or videos? Why are you starting a blog and what’s the point of it all?

These are some of the questions I am asked with new writers when they start working on their brand. I usually say what works for you works for you. I like to be consistent with my writings while others write when they feel the need or the urge hits them. Even writing randomly can be a pattern that your subscribers can get use to. It’s your blog however if you have a nice following in a little way it is their blog as well since they are taking the time to read it.

And once you have this all figured out what do you write about? Do you make it strictly business or do you add a few personal bits inside of it? What do you want your subscribers to know or learn from?

There as you can see a few things to consider when you start writing on a site. Taking some time to figure it out in the beginning can save you frustration in the long wrong. Blogging is a fun thing to do with sharing your opinions, passing along information and learning from others if you cross-post. However you want it to be it is a nice outlet regardless if you have a small or a large following.

Writing My First Death Scene

A few months back I wrote my first death scene. Before I go any further this book is for YA and up. People know me for my Jasper series which is a children’s series. But I do write in YA and adult as well just the Jasper series was the first ones out.

When I wrote this scene, the death one, it just flowed. I am not sure if I read to many mystery and action books or just watch too much TV but it didn’t take me long to write close to 1000 words on this. It did scare me when I giggled upon finishing. Either that was due to me actually writing it, how it seemed effortless or perhaps that it made me nervous how much fun I had doing it. As someone who has written children’s book it was an odd experience. But what was fun was when I told other authors about this experience and how they laughed with me at my glee. #Writersgetme

I lost nine characters during the fight. I guess I was making up for lost time. I have yet to develop the scene fully and unsure where it will show up in this WIP but I’m hoping it progresses the storyline to the reader.

If it is this much fun doing this kind of writing Jasper volume 4 and 5 may be written much later so I can explore this one more fully.
