Your business:Writing

bag_of_money_clip_art_18777

Tax time. As authors do you run your writing as a business? Do you deduct things pertinent to it? For example: mileage, fees to conferences, ink cartridges and in some case office space?

2014 was the year I noted down as much as I could. I logged everything that I could think of that pertained to my craft. Can all of it be used, I’m not sure. That is what I need to find out. It could be a bit depressing to see how much one might have kicked out versus how much came in. But it can also get you focus on what you need to do in making your career, if you so chose to do so, a business.

At the moment I am typing up my mileage. This is not a fun task. I did manage to download a travel log from online so this year will be not as bad.

I have set aside a calendar and notebook to make it easier to keep a record of what may come my way. I did the same in 2014 but will try to improve on it this year. This may be tedious in the long run, it may make no difference at all when it comes to filing but I won’t know that until we do file and see if my efforts were for naught.

Sometimes it takes the fun out of writing but if nothing else it gives me an indication on where I stand.

Cross Promotion: Let’s do it

IMG_0039a

As an author it is needed to get out there and promote ourselves. One way I have found is to cross promote. This can be done in many ways. One can use their social media platform to tweet, post on Facebook and on Google Plus just to name a few.

There is another way that I have used in the past. I have hosted authors on this page to show their wares or one of their own post. In return some have returned the favor. I told myself late in 2014 that I needed to do this form of marketing more to spread my name out as well as others.

So this post is short and simple. If anyone wants to cross promote with me let me know in the comments or send an email. It could include a book release, an interview, a piece of writing or something else we can come up with. I feel as authors helping each other only helps ourselves. Let’s host each other.

I will be sending this message across my platform in hopes of getting some momentum for 2015. Let’s do this and make our platform shine more this year.

Book review: A comment back from the author

Paper_with_pen

As some of you know I review books for a few sites and also on my own. I do an unbiased opinion of what I read. Now and then I get a response from an author on what they think of what I came up with. I received this in the mail and it made me feel pretty good. This is just one of the reasons I do this but it is high on the list: helping other authors out.

Here it is.

I wanted to send you a quick note of thanks for your kind review

Your constructive criticism was well taken.  It appears that I did occasionally “telegraph” a succeeding scene or chapter.  Reviewers like you are teaching me so much about how to sharpen my writing skills.  My 2nd novel should be so much the better for it.  I’m very grateful for that.

So, please accept my thanks for your well-done review.  I wish you good health, peace, and success in all of your endeavors.

I’m glad to help other fellow authors. It makes the effort worthwhile.
