People that use ghostwriters: Do you consider them an author?

A lot of people uses ghostwriters to write down their words. So is this a job one would be interested in or not? Well, the definition of a ghostwriter according to Freelancewriting.com is: ghost writers are writers for hire who take money but none of the credit for the work produced. The original writer, or author, is hiring the ghost as a freelance writer to produce copy writer work for a fee. The author takes all the credit for all the original work produced, including all the original writing produced by the ghost writer. The ghost, who is usually paid in advance of completing the job, gets the money as a “work for hire” job and assumes none of the credit for the ghost writing work.

The plus side is you get paid and if you do a good job you might get hired again. The bad side is you get no credit at all for your work. And to anyone who is a writer that is a lot of work to put into someone’s else name to be on the book.

So why do I bring this up? I was listing to a podcast and the person listed a host of big names from athletes, artists and others who have used a ghostwriter.

So, do you consider the people who hire a ghostwriter to be an author? From the accolades I have seen given to those who have used a ghostwriters it sounds like they are getting the credit. They did pay for the service that can never be forgotten. But can they be considered by all account an author?

I guess it all depends on who you ask. From those I have asked the answer has been no. But still asking others to get a fuller sample for the question.

“It’s complicated”: Is it really?

How many times have you heard in a movie or TV the phrase, “It’s complicated,” or read it in a book? If you are like me than too many to count. To be honest it has gotten old and it has been old for a while now.

How about you write out the scene? It does not have to be a full-blown back story but just a bit to explain it. I often scream at the TV when I hear the phrase. Take some time do a little work and explain why it is in your view complicated.

Your job as a writer for a show or a movie is to well write. Taking the cheap way out, and sadly it works for the most part, is just frustrating. But another sad part is it has been used so often that people hear it, accept it and move on not putting the writers against the wall and holding them accountable for it.

How about saying what it it? We are too lazy to get into it right now. We don’t want to bother. We know you will accept the word even if we never ever explain it. Who knows why it happens as often as it does.

Our readers and viewers deserve better, don’t they? If you paid good money for a book or a movie, and let’s face those are getting pricier as the years go by, you should get your bang for the money Heck, we deserve better ourselves if we are the writers producing such books and movies.

I don’t see this changing anytime soon, if ever, but I had to let this out. Why? I guess it’s not so complicated for me.

Amazon Best Selling Author

How impress are we with someone being a NY Best Selling author, Newberry Medal Award or any award when it comes to writing? If a person is not a reader by design maybe not. But to those who do read and love it might consider it a pretty cool thing to notice which books get noticed and are considered a good pick up to read. Do we rush to read these books when the news is out? Are these books worthy of us taking the time and money to invest in such novels?

I have found over the years just because a book reaches the NY Times Best Selling list does not mean I am going to love it. That has happened on a couple of occasions. That is when I learned the key word which is selling. They are on the list for how much they sold not how awesome the book was. Granted nothing should be taken away from an author who has the good fortune to have enough books sell to reach this status.

And while I am none of the above I became an Amazon best-selling author. This is something that I keep forgetting to add to my accomplishments. It happened quickly as the book rose to number nine and soon enough it fell. But it occurred and I need to own that. I attended a webinar and that was one of the key points. As a writer we need to own any accomplishments we get regardless how small or big. It is hard to get these awards and we should toot our horn.

To add to this a number of friends keep telling me I can call myself an international writer since a good portion of my books have sold over seas in a number of countries. While I laugh when they tell me this it does get me thinking. Why am I not including these two accomplishments?

Writing a book takes some serious time. The work after that needs to be done after it is done takes so much more time! Getting a book published adds to that. It is not easy so when you manage to get any award we need to include it when we have a chance
