Writers Mingling

pansiesa

This weekend is our 2nd annual Writer’s Conference. Last year was such a hoot but it was only one day. With it being so successful funds were found to increase that to two days..

I will be volunteering again with the registration table. It should be loads of fun as writers descend upon the library to learn, talk and mingle with other like-minded people. It’s a free event, woot, all one had to do was register. But it helps knowing the coordinator for I was added immediately.

At my house my family will listen to me talk about writing in various forms and will for the most part try to not appear bored. This weekend they get a break from all of that.

The weekend kicks off tonight as I head to an open mic event at a local coffee shop. Nervous, excited and again nervous. But it should be good practice.

My reviews on Amazon

2013-08-12 08.28.43

When I do a review for a book I place it on eight sites. I don’t get paid to do this, I just do it. Getting a recent email from Amazon I discovered I had reviewed 133 books for them. That number blew my mind. I’m not even sure when I first started to do it, but it sure has added up.

But in the email they sent me was an interesting fact. Customers have found your reviews helpful 123 times. Say what? That blew my mind again. When I did the math, if it can be done this way mind you, that gives me a rating of over 92%. I think this is pretty neat.

I don’t place reviews with any ulterior motive. As a reviewer for Booksneeze I am required to place a review on a commercial site. Being so use to doing this I now review books that are asked of me from fellow writers and books I just read for fun.

Reviewing not only helps the author and the readers, it helps me as well. It homes in on my skills as an author when I critique other people’s works and when I am going over mine. That is something that you can’t learn in a class. It is perfected by doing actual reviews and doing them over and over again.

But the fact that 123 customers have found my review helpful makes me smile.

Shooting squirrels

After I had to delay the release of Squirrel Mafia due to the pictures, I was up and running trying to find new pictures. The little buggers who were always around and under my feet simply were no longer around. It’s like they knew I needed new photos.

This past Sunday my husband and I went out with the intention of doing so at the site we took the originals. While the color version of the book is fine, the black and white copy needs some adjustments.

At first when we sat down on benches, in the hot as heck North Carolina weather, I had no luck. A few minutes passed that turned into 10 that soon turned into 20 minutes again with no luck. The little demons were purposely avoiding me.

Then I heard it. The sound of empty nut shells falling on the payment by the bench I was sitting on. Looking up I noticed the little guy above staring at me as he busily ate. I was so giddy I had found one I almost missed my shot. But he wasn’t going anywhere as he kept on eating the food that was around him. That taught me to instead of looking with my eyes that I needed to listen with my ears as I heard in other nearby spots the sound of shells hitting the payment and the tell-tale sound of the squeaking, for lack of a better word, of them communicating with each other.

It didn’t take long after that for me to end up with a selection of pictures that I hope will end up in the book so it can be released. I will sort through them, and send them off to my editor after which when she is done, will order a new proof to see if I was successful.

Cross fingers everyone. Hopefully soon I will be able to add this book to my list at http://tinyurl.com/meedtwe
