Guest Blogging: An Author’s Platform

2012-11-09 06.10.13

The lovely Mcv Egan has asked me to guest blog over at http://4covert2overt.blogspot.com/2013/05/an-authors-platform-by-sharon-c-williams.html

The topic is one’s authors platform.  Here is a small piece of it.

————————–

I started working on my social platform a couple of years ago. I was clueless at first. However I had read an article in Writer’s Digest that discussed it. In that article the author wrote down her Twitter account and encouraged people to follow her.

That was my first introduction. I had an account for a few years but never did anything with it. But now

was the time to branch out with my brand. But I did not wait until my book was complete, revised, edited and then revised yet again. I did not wait until after my writer groups had taken a whack at it.

Instead about a year before I got to that point I tossed my name into ring and made my way to the center. There are so many avenues to get your name out besides Facebook and Twitter. The list goes on to Google +, Linked, Goodreads, Pinterest, and a Facbebook page that is separate from your main page. There is having one’s own blog. There are more out there.

Book Cover Release:Root Canal

RCBC1bGR

This is the book cover to the short story I am releasing on May 10th. I’m liking it for it suits the contents so well. I am a bit nervous for this is my first time doing this releasing and self publishing for the world to see kind of thing. Hopefully people will get a couple of chuckles out of it when they read it. That was the intent. There will be more coming on the story when it is released

Writing Passive: The Zombie Way

zombie

Zombies can help me figure out when I write passive or not. Who really knew this? I sure as heck did not. I love zombies. I watch the films of old to current while reading books on them. Granted the movies of this time frame make zombies more smarter than their counter parts of the past.

I do not always know when my writings are passive. That is one of the reasons I adore my editor and my writer groups that I am a part off. For they know, unlike me, when I am doing it wrong.  If I paid better attention or made a conscious effort to learn I might be able to do it. But again as I mentioned a few times before I am more interested in writing and leave it at that. But I came across this gem on FB. At first it made me laugh simply because I love zombies

Can it be as easy as this? I did put it into a few of my sentences, got a good giggle out of it and did find some that made sense versus those that did not. Though I would have to go through my entire WIP to know for sure on how often I did this. But I thought it was a cute little tip to pass on to others.

All you have to do is insert zombies in your sentences.

“She was killed [by zombies.]” <—- Makes sense? Yes. It’s passive voice.

“Zombies killed [by zombies] her.” <—- Makes sense? No. It’s active voice.

Hopefully this will help someone .

P.S. I actually own this book
