Word of mouth can be good and bad for a person and a business. But recently it was good, really good, for my business. A women’s magazine in town is having an article on women writers in the area. The reporter contacted the library and ipso facto I received word with the reporter’s name, email and phone number to contact her to be interviewed, in case I was interested. As if I was going to say no, right?

Calling Stephanie up I mentioned what I had been told. After a few minutes she recalled who I was. Asking if this was a good time, it was, we began. She asked how long I had been writing, what did I write about, how did I get started and how did it feel like to have a book published. Her reaction to the last answer was great as she laughed and was excited for me.

She was great. The interview went well and was awesome. It comes out the first week of May. I’m excited to read the article. I already know I need ten copies for people who requested one. Sweet.

Promoting yourself: Are you being a pain?

IMG_6346How far do you promote yourself and your books? Do you do it to the point that people turn away when they see you coming? Do you do so much or ask for so much that people rather not be bothered? Self promotion for any business is tough. Some people do it well and some struggle at it.

All one has to do is look at the TV and see those who have done it well or were in some cases at the right place at the right time. I would love to be at the right place at the right time when it comes to my writings. Some of those places are conferences and author meets. There you are vying for the attention of the big leaguers along with a hell of a lot of other authors trying to do the same thing. It’s a tough business. Don’t let anyone convince you it isn’t.

There are so many avenues we can try, doing them all will drive you batty, and let’s not forget there are always new avenues to try. If you don’t want a life or prefer not to spend time with your family then hey knock yourself out and go for it. Health wise you might want to rethink that.

When someone told me years ago that writing was the easy part, I laughed for I was still in the process of writing my first complete book. Since then I have given this same advice to a number of writers. They, like I did, didn’t believe it until they saw for themselves.

It’s crazy out there once you are done your book. Just don’t forget to breath and not piss off any potential readers or people who are willing to help you.

If you died, how long would it take before anyone on your social media noticed? We talk to a lot of people in different formats such as Facebook, Twitter, G+, and LinkedIn just to name a few. But if we stopped the flow of activity would anyone notice?

This topic hit me last week when someone texted me saying they had not seen me online lately and was wondering if I was okay. That I had to admit was nice that someone noticed. Someone who had missed me. For let’s be honest, it is nice to be missed. It means someone paid attention, someone cares that you are not around. Who doesn’t like to be missed? I know I do.

We are so busy with our lives and our careers that sometimes we forget to check up on people or sadly even notice they haven’t posted, texted or made a reference that you normally would laugh at or agree to.

Life goes at such a fast pace and it seems to go faster as each year goes by. I would surely hate to lose touch with people while they are still with us. Let’s not forget those around us before it’s to late.
