Technology is a wonderful thing. It helps save lives through medical and scientific uses. Today we are able to use computers as small as a tablet and use a phone just about anywhere.
This country has made many advances in the last century and it continues to improve. Our children don’t know what it is like to hear a record on a record player. Some are not aware of old technologies such as VHS tapes. Nowadays children are born into a house that is filled with computers, 3D tv’s and the latest electronics. I did not sit in front of a computer until I was 18. I still have records stashed away. I keep telling my son that trends go in cycles- his children will be raised with things more advance and they will look at their parents and think how did they survive. I remember dial-up modems- something from the ice age as far as this generation is concern. We are lost without our toys that we feel we must have, we need and can not live without.
Two weeks ago my laptop died on me. This did not immediately stress me for I have a smart phone that does quite a bit. I am a writer who writes my stories long hand and then type. However not being able to type and submit did cause me some frustration. I dealt with it as we all deal with things that go wrong in our lives-aka electronics. The days where technology goes wrong makes me wonder, what would happen to society if technology malfunctioned even for a week.
My back up plan was my smart phone- my blackberry which I adore and use until it passes out on me and begs me to let it die mercifully. It started acting up 5 weeks ago. I called about 8 times, went across 3 countries, 11 techs, and 3 bits of misinformation they gave me that made it take 5 weeks to get resolved. Something that could have been solved on the first day I called all those weeks ago. Needless to say an angry complaint will be filed. The cost to keep this current is not small change. I was going to write a post on my 5 week ordeal but it is time to let it go.
In the same week my microwave and oven broke down on me. It made for a frustrating few weeks of malfunctions with my gadgets and toys that we have deemed necessary for human living. Technology we deemed necessary when taken away leaves us with a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort.
We have become so dependent on technology that human are lost without them. If you talk to a tech or service person the answer will be along the lines of “ I can’t help you the computers are down.” The days of critical thinking may be over. It is what I had to do and it is most definitely what my parents did during the depression. We have become so lax it scary and down right sad. We are letting it take over who we are as thinking, living and breathing humans- it ‘s what separates us from the rest of the animals on this planet. It makes me wonder about the planet. We have made great strives in the field of technology, it has advanced the planet with each passing generation, but at what cost. For every strive forward, human logic and thinking takes a step back.
Technology is needed, but it is really worth it and at what cost
