Free Resources:Big and Small

The literary grant I received gave me the ability to join the SCWBI and the North Carolina Writers Network. With that comes opportunities. On March 3rd  the NCWN gave me on their site two shout outs. One for my book, Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure and the other was for my winning a literary grant last November. These were free and part of being a member.

Even if I get no sales from this, so what? Seriously, so what? My name got shout out to the huge memberships of this organization. We as authors got to take advantage of any free publicity that is out there, regardless how small it is. Every bit helps.

In December of last year, the writing group I formed released an anthology. We are very proud of it. But it doesn’t end there. A local library will be hosting us on March 25th to talk about our book. But not only that. We will read excerpt from it and discuss topics on writing. I will be talking about traditional publishing versus self publishing. At the end of meeting, we will have an opportunity to sell our wares and any other books we may have written. I get to show off all my writings and all that is required is a few hours of my time. SCORE.

Again every bit helps. I am constantly trying to come up with ways to get my name and brand out. I don’t turn down an idea. I will mull it over in my head a million difference ways to see if it is doable. This is our lives as authors. If not, it should be. Baby steps lead to wonderful things. It is all about perspective.

If we let go of the small steps that can help us, the leap from one big thing to another may result in us falling between the steps. I don’t like to fall, so I will go with baby steps.

Newletters

Email marketing is something I’m new to in the sense I don’t have my own newsletter. I most definitely subscribe to a lot of them. For some reason I thought this might be a good idea to grow my brand. I asked some people, research a few sites and made a small list. I found one I liked that was free, if I had x amount of subscribers, call my name. It wasn’t easy since this was totally foreign to me. But hour after hour I worked on it trying to get something that people might actually like.

Signing up myself I did a test run and waited. When it finally appeared in my mailbox I was able to see where I had gone wrong. Just before I deleted the email something caught my eye at the end. My home address. Not wanting to shout to the world HERE I AM I immediately went back to the site to check this out. Turns out there is this thing call the anti-spam law that they adhere to as do the other programs. Contacting them by mail I was told I did have options. YAY!

I could use a business address. I work at home. Or I could get a post office box and use that. Hmm let’s see. I need to pay for a post office box to get my newsletter to a subscription population of one? Can you tell I was not feeling that? I was now dejected for I had high hopes I had high hopes. Anyone remembers that song? Venting to my editor she shot across a possibility of a place where you did not have to put your address on the page. I will be checking it out soon. They do have a free option, I am totally loving that. Hopefully this one will work out.

How badly do I need a newsletter especially one with one subscriber? I’m not sure. But it be fun to learn something else new that could help my brand.

Today’s post is to showcase a group of writings doing a wonderful thing. I met Chris through a forum and we buddies every since. It was through her that I came to learn about the group.

THE PEACOCK WRITERS

We are a small group of writers who have banded together with one purpose in mind – to collate children’s stories & poems to donate to children’s charities.

Thanks to our wonderful team led by Paula Shene & Gwen D’Young & our contributing authors, we manage to publish two books each year. No two series are the same as each have their own common theme. Each one is available to but as Kindle edition, plain text or illustrated version.

I truly believe the following books will make a lovely present for children this Christmas:

A Whimsical Holiday http://www.amazon.com/Whimsical-Holiday-Children-Childrens-ebook/dp/B006MQ1A0K

Snowflakes on My Lashes http://www.amazon.com/Snowflakes-My-Lashes-Peacock-Presents/dp/1492749443
